Qatar became the first host nation to lose an opening match at a World Cup tournament.

Striker Valencia had a third-minute effort disallowed for offside in the build-up

but then converted a penalty in the 16th and headed the second in the 31st minute of a lopsided affair.

Enner Valencia’s penalty kick and header (16′, 31′) help Ecuador see off Qatar in the World Cup’s opening-day match.

The unsavoury taste of this result may linger a bit longer than the hosts would like in the grand scheme of things.

“Really, really poor,” says Sultan, one of the guests watching the game at the majlis in Al Rayyan.
